Balanced Literacy

Balanced Literacy

In order for students to get meaning from print and communicate using print, a balanced literacy program that balances the learning of phonics and whole language must be implemented. Students must have time to experience text while also learning the mechanics and skills necessary for comprehension.

Reading Strategies

Reading Strategies

From direct lessons at the beginning of the year, to advanced discussion groups towards the end, the students are always working to build their comprehension. From questioning to making connections, students need clear strategies for becoming better readers.

Fluency

Reader's Theater

Drama can be a very engaging way of teaching reading. Having students read and act out scripts is a fun way to bring text to life. It’s even more fun if you have props!

Read Aloud

Reading aloud to students provides a myriad of opportunities to practice higher level thinking. Here the students were keeping a detailed list of characters and included a labeled visualization to help make sure we all understood what was going on.

Discussion Groups

Discussion Groups

Book clubs provide an amazing opportunity for students to practice what they know, in an environment filled with choice and higher level thinking. Students show up with a specific role to be filled and each pushes each other to do their best.

Writing Process

Writing Process

The students are constantly engaged in the writing process. Whether it be small editing groups, conferencing partners or independent work time, the focus is always on the creative process.

6+1 Traits of Writing

Like the reading strategies, we constantly focus on the 6+1 traits of writing. From direct lessons at the beginning of the year, to critiquing others writing at the end, the focus is on improving ourselves as writers.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary

Making words come alive with engaging activities helps student’s to add to their usable vocabulary. It allows them to understand context and provides opportunities for them to use the words in their everyday writing and reading.

Phonics

Working with words, such as our magnetic word wall, provides the students opportunities to play with sounds. Understanding the connection between word sounds and meaning is a powerful tool in comprehension.
